All Learners Network

Tools for educators, inclusion for students, equity for communities.

Thu Oct 14, 3:30 PM - Wed Dec 8, 5:30 PM (EDT)

The All Learners Network Conference sponsored by the Agency of Education is back for 2021! We made the difficult decision to host this event virtually instead of in person this year. We will be offering three 2-hour events on Zoom. When you register for this conference, you will get the Zoom link for all three days and will be emailed the program of events so you can choose which workshops you would like to attend.

Wed Nov 3, 2021, 3:30 PM - Wed Jan 12, 2022, 6:30 PM (EDT)

All Learners Network Learning Center, Chace Mill, Burlington, VT

By the time students reach middle and high school, some have developed difficulties that range from misconceptions about new concepts (like proportions) to difficulties with previous math (like division). In this workshop ALN Founder John Tapper and Thetford Academy Teacher Melissa Perry will address intervention and support for students at this level. The workshop will review how early number concepts develop, as many secondary teachers are less aware of these ideas, and focus on three important areas for intervention: fractions, proportions and integers. Special Educators, interventionists and classroom teachers will all find content they can use.

Mon Dec 13, 5:00 - 7:00 PM (EST)

All Learners Network Learning Center, Chace Mill, Burlington, VT
So models, why the tape diagram and double number line?. We will talk about and share strategies to help leverage students’ work with models as a way to make connections to the mathematics of a situation. Snacks and beverages will be provided for this event- 21+.

We all want children to have easy access to additive facts to 20 (or even 100!). However, we often sacrifice understanding for automaticity. In this workshop, John will explore models of recall and memory, the importance of knowing and using additive facts, and techniques for improving recall and fluency. Participants will leave with strategies they can apply immediately.

Number talks are one Number Sense Routine that can be used during a Launch. Number Talks were developed for classroom teachers to engage students in “mental math” through grappling with interesting mathematics problems. Educators can use number talks regularly as introductions to the day’s mathematical practice, as “warm ups” for other lessons, or as stand-alone extended engagements with mathematical concepts. In Pre-K through 1st Grade most Number Talks are done using a visual or model. Come learn about Number Talks with ALN Facilitator TJ Jemison.

In this 2-hour workshop participants will learn about early numeracy by digging into number relationships that support the development of number sense. The content will focus on PreK specific games that promote flexible thinking about the relationship one more and one less as this relates to the PreK HLC. This will be explored through a lens that highlights oral number words, numerals and quantities. Participants will leave with several games that support these ideas.

Schools are inundated with data – about enrollment, demographics, and performance. While all school and district leaders are expected to make data-driven decisions, the practices of gathering, analyzing, and acting on sound data are not simple. It’s easy to misread data, make claims that the data can’t support, or miss opportunities data offer.

In this workshop, John will explore the ways that using models for conceptual understanding, can improve fact fluency. He will also explore recall and memory and the importance of knowing and using facts. Participants will leave with strategies they can apply immediately.
