VT AOE: Launch/Number Sense Routines 6 Hour Workshop
Launch (often a Number Talk or short problem) is the first component of the All Learners Network lesson approach. We are offering this 6 hour workshop to help get you started with this routine in your classroom, school or district.
This workshop was created in response to a large number of requests from participants about practices that support all students at the start of a math lesson. This workshop focuses on many different number sense routines that can be used at the start of a math block including using images, number talks, math circle activities, and more, all designed to help deepen students' number sense.
The purpose of this workshop is to inspire participants to reimagine how they use the first five to fifteen minutes of their math block for purposeful, discussion-rich number sense routines in their classroom. Launch is the vehicle for powerful instructional routines which are amplified through consistent exposure over time. Through intentional problem selection teachers encourage students to own the conversation and their learning.
Supported by research, number sense routines:
- Build flexibility with numbers
- Deepen understanding of operations
- Promote discourse
- Address gaps in prior learning as well as foreshadow upcoming learning
